Introduction & Project Background
This project involved the replacement of a front door at a period property in Chelmsford, Essex. We supplied and installed a bespoke Frenchay timber door with matching side panels and fanlights, set within a striking arched brick entrance porch. The brief was to create a front door that made a real statement while respecting the character of the property and the architectural detail of the existing opening.
Client Testimonial
"We wanted a front door that really did justice to the house, and Timber Windows Essex delivered exactly that. From the colour choice to the ironmongery, every detail was spot on. It's transformed the entrance completely — we get compliments on it constantly."
Homeowner, Woodford Green, Essex
Glazing
The door, side panels, and fanlights are all glazed with 9mm rectangle, a lead pattern and Kathedral obscure glass. A classic leaded pattern that adds period character while maintaining privacy at the entrance.
The Challenge
The existing front door had reached the end of its life and no longer reflected the quality or character of the property. The challenge was finding a replacement that could hold its own against the building's most dominant architectural feature ; a bold arched brick entrance with an ornate keystone detail that immediately draws the eye.
A standard door set simply wouldn't cut it. The new installation needed to fill the arched opening confidently, with side panels and fanlights that worked with the proportions of the porch rather than against them. The finish, glazing, and ironmongery all had to be chosen with care to complement both the brickwork and the wider aesthetic of the property.
Our Solution
Working closely with the homeowner, we supplied and installed a Frenchay style timber front door, complete with matching side panels and fanlights, fitted precisely within the arched brick opening. The door is painted in Farrow & Ball Dove Tail, a sophisticated warm greige that sits beautifully against the red brick surround and gives the entrance a calm, considered elegance. The Frenchay's clean panelled lines and generous glazed upper section make it a natural fit for a property of this period and stature.
Ironmongery
Finished with Samuel Heath satin chrome ironmongery, the hardware strikes exactly the right note, refined and contemporary without feeling out of place on a traditional property. The satin chrome finish coordinates effortlessly with the Dove Tail paintwork, tying the whole entrance together.
The Transformation
The finished entrance is quite simply a showstopper. What was once a tired and underperforming front door is now a confident, beautifully crafted centrepiece that does full justice to the arched brick porch and the property behind it. The combination of Dove Tail paintwork, Cathedral leaded glazing, and satin chrome Samuel Heath ironmongery creates an entrance that is both timeless and distinctive.
At Timber Windows Essex, we believe a front door should make a statement. This one certainly does.
