Introduction & Project Background
Built in 1887 this property is a rare and characterful Victorian property in Copford, Essex. This whole-house window and door replacement project saw Timber Windows Essex supply and install eleven bespoke slim box sash windows and two timber doors, each one crafted to honour the extraordinary architectural detail of a building that has stood for nearly 140 years. With gothic pointed arches, arched sash openings and a decorative timber gable, this is a property that demands a level of bespoke craftsmanship that very few manufacturers and installers can deliver.
Client Testimonial
"Our house is very unusual and we were genuinely concerned about finding someone who could do it justice. Timber Windows Essex understood exactly what was needed from the very first conversation. The gothic windows are perfect, they look as though they've always been there. The doors are beautiful too, and the whole project has transformed how the house feels. We're absolutely thrilled with the result."

Kingston Front Door
The front entrance is a Kingston style timber door, set within a white painted frame and topped with a bespoke gothic shaped fanlight, a detail that ties the door directly to the architectural language of the property. The door is painted in Farrow & Ball Hague Blue, a deep, rich navy that makes a bold and confident statement beneath the timber porch canopy. The glazed upper panels feature etched sun glass, adding a layer of elegance and period authenticity to the entrance. Finished with polished chrome Samuel Heath ironmongery, every detail of this door has been considered and executed with care.
The Challenge
This project is not a straightforward property. Its Victorian Gothic architecture, complete with pointed arch window openings on the side elevation, full arched openings on the front, and a striking decorative gable, presented a level of complexity that goes well beyond a standard window replacement project.
Every window opening on this property is shaped. The gothic pointed arches on the side elevation are particularly demanding, requiring window frames that follow the precise geometry of each opening accurately and sympathetically. The arched openings to the front elevation add further variety, meaning no two windows on this property are quite the same. Off-the-shelf solutions were never an option here.
The two doors presented their own individual briefs, one a statement front entrance with a gothic shaped fanlight and etched glazing, the other a secondary door with equal attention to finish and detail. Both needed to reflect the quality of the house while expressing their own distinct character.
Our Solution
Working closely with the homeowner, Timber Windows Essex specified and installed a complete suite of bespoke timber products, each made to measure and designed to fit precisely within the shaped openings of this exceptional Victorian property. The result is a seamless, sympathetic replacement that respects the age and character of our home in every detail.
Slim Box Sash Windows
We supplied and installed eleven bespoke slim box sash windows across the property, all finished in white. The windows span two distinct opening shapes, full arched heads to the front elevation, and striking gothic pointed arches to the side, each one individually crafted to follow the exact geometry of its opening. The slim box sash profile is perfectly in keeping with the delicate Victorian proportions of the property, delivering the narrow sightlines and elegant finish that a house of this age and character demands.
Seen from the exterior, the crisp white frames sit beautifully against the pale yellow London brick, the shaped heads drawing the eye and reinforcing the gothic character that makes Hope Villa so distinctive. From the interior, the arched and gothic shaped frames create genuinely beautiful window reveals, particularly the front arched sash, which frames its view like a work of art.
Kingston Secondary Door
The second door is a Kingston style timber door finished in Farrow & Ball Downpipe, a sophisticated dark charcoal that complements the Hague Blue of the front entrance while giving this door its own quiet authority. Set within a white painted frame, the glazed panels feature etched star glass, adding decorative detail that feels entirely at home on a Victorian property of this character. Polished chrome Samuel Heath ironmongery completes the specification, maintaining consistency of quality across both doors.
The Transformation
Hope Villa has been waiting nearly 140 years for windows and doors worthy of its architecture. Eleven bespoke slim box sash windows, gothic, arched, and everything in between — along with two beautifully specified Kingston doors have given this extraordinary Victorian property the refurbishment it deserves.
The result is a house that wears its age with pride and its new windows with confidence. At Timber Windows Essex, projects like this are a reminder of why bespoke timber craftsmanship matters, and why no two installations are ever quite the same.
